In the fast-paced and ever-evolving world of construction, experience is a teacher that rarely hands out soft lessons. For David Burdette, CEO of Burdette Construction, one of his most defining career lessons came early—just one year out of college. A $13 million project he was helping to manage took a hard turn when buried hazardous waste was discovered just days into the build. What followed was a ballooned budget, hard decisions, and a team that had to adapt or collapse under the weight of unexpected change.
What stood out wasn’t just the setback—it was the response. Surrounded by seasoned professionals, Burdette witnessed firsthand the power of patience, persistence, and adaptability. “It taught me that taking on a large challenge is about one bite at a time,” he recalls. “You have to maintain a dynamic posture. Be focused, be intentional, but most of all, be flexible.”
This early lesson became a cornerstone of Burdette’s leadership philosophy, particularly as his projects grew in scope and complexity. One such project was the development of Black Bear Falls, a 45-acre log home resort in Gatlinburg. With no prior experience building a log cabin, Burdette’s confidence stemmed not from knowing all the answers, but from having navigated the unknown before. “I’d never done it before, but I got it done—just like those times.”
Project Management in a Rapidly Growing Region
East Tennessee is booming, and managing construction projects here means keeping pace with a landscape that shifts as fast as the skyline. Burdette emphasizes the need to always be looking forward—using hard-won lessons from the past to guide present decisions. “Resources change fast,” he says, “and staying positive and flexible with those changes is key.”
This outlook is especially vital when coordinating subcontractors and trades in a region where labor can be as unpredictable as the weather. Burdette believes success hinges on having the right people in the right places—a challenge that requires not only technical planning but deep people skills. “You can’t do it alone,” he adds. “It takes a team.”
The Power of Soft Skills
In an industry dominated by timelines and materials, it’s easy to underestimate the value of soft skills. Yet Burdette insists they’re what often make or break a project. From clear communication to empathetic leadership, soft skills show up in the everyday choices that keep a project moving forward—even when it’s off script.
“We all want the job done right,” he says, “but how we get there depends on our ability to adapt, trust, and lead under pressure.”
Building More Than Structures
At its core, Burdette Construction isn’t just in the business of building homes or resorts—it’s in the business of building trust, resilience, and community. Every challenge is a chance to grow. Every project is a new chapter. And every setback is a stepping stone to something greater.
In Burdette’s words, “Be focused, be stern, be intentional, be committed. But never forget to be flexible.”
